Bali, Indonesia. A travel story. South Kuta, Tanah Lot, Ulan Danu, Lake Batur, Ubud

Thanks to some amazing people who trusted us to take their wedding photos half way across the world, we were able to travel to Bali in September of 2014. If you haven’t had a chance, you should check out Kelly and Albert’s wedding – it was breathtaking. The first few days of our trip were spent near Kuta close to the wedding location. After a few days, we made our way to Ubud, where we were able to do a bit more exploring. Bali is a place we’d been dreaming of going to for many years but when we were finally there, we realized our dreams hadn’t at all done this place justice. We’ve never seen a greener green, or a more breathtaking sunset. The people were kind, the food was cheap, and the Bintang was flowing.

Here’s a (not very) short photographic narrative of some of our adventures. If you ever have a chance of traveling to this unique wonderland, take it!

We stopped at the Deus ex Machina “Temple of Enthusiasm.” Not a real temple. But nonetheless, we got some good drinks, talked to other travelers, and found a little home-away-from-home amongst the surf boards, cafe racers, and art. The place is basically a compound that houses surfboard shaping bays, a motorcycle garage, a barbershop, an art gallery, a killer restaurant, and probably a bunch of other rad stuff.

Tanah Lot: “Land in the Sea.” This temple was a must see if you can deal with crowds of tourists. We came at low tide so we waded the tide pools and watched many a tourist get soaked from the waves crashing against the temple walls.

Exploring Ubud was way cooler than we ever could have hoped. Though the city center is somewhat tourist saturated, its very easy to escape into more rural landscapes and get a glimpse into every day Bali life.

One of the absolute best decision of our lives: renting a scooter for $5 a day and taking to a few of the roads less traveled. Mind you, many of the pictures from this point on were taken from the back of said scooter. Driving in Bali took some getting used to. They drive on the left and don’t really seem to have many rules other than the person in front has the right-of-way. People pass on every side and there are “one way streets” but people will still ride their scooters against traffic. Once we got a little more comfortable we had a blast. Being from LA, we were amazed at how kind and patient all of the drivers were.

Our next journey on our Scoopy scooter brought us through 160km of jungle, rice terraces, volcanoes, and mountain lakes. We had no gps, no street signs, and a paper map.

At the top a long climb with hairpin turns and people passing dump trunks like mad, we made it to Danau Beratan. Intead of the $6 it would be to enter the temple here, we payed a man in a little wood shack $10 to take us on a speed boat road around the lake – second best decision of the trip. Our boat driver put the boat in full throttle, climbed onto the front, and told us he’d take our picture with our camera if we wanted. In these situations, the only right answer is “yes.”

From Danau Beratan to Danau Batur. We got a lost a few times on this rural road through the mountains, but somehow we made our way around the bend to some amazing views and found the road down to the lake.

2013 Favorites – a collection of wedding, travel, maternity, engagement photography

Well, that was a good year – it’s crazy that 2013 is over already. It’s really hard for us to look at our work objectively and so it’s hard to pick our “best” work from our many thousands of photos. These images don’t really represent the scope of our work and aren’t necessarily our “best” but they are certainly some of our favorites from this last year. We are so thankful for all of the awesome people who have trusted us to photograph them on some of the most important days of their lives. We’ve made some great friendships and seen some cool places. It’s been an amazing journey and it’s so fun to look back on this year and see the ways we’ve grown. We can’t wait for what 2014 will bring!

Dylan and Sara: Los Angeles Adventure, Downtown, Griffith Park

Last week we had the awesome opportunity to spend some time showing Dylan and Sara around LA. They’re amazing photographers and all around great people. We started out at Umami Burger in Santa Monica then took them to the Art District and had some Handsome Coffee and pie. We finished up the day with a sunset sesh at Griffith Park. All in all it was a killer day. Anyway, there’s really no way to get photographers together without a lot of picture taking. So here you have it: some pictures.

Portland and Seattle: some personal travel photography

So we got the rad opportunity to photograph Danny and Jenny’s wedding in Portland a little while back. It was a blast. We decided that since it was our first time in the Northwest, we wanted to hangout for a little while and also visit Seattle. We really loved the overarching laid-back vibe of Portland. I mean, who couldn’t love a city that places so much importance on brunch? While we were there it was hot and sunny and kind of just felt like California. I’m thinking that’s a rare occurrence and we would have been totally fine with it except that we were hoping for some killer cloud photos. Emily and I had an awesome time exploring the city while consuming amazing food/bevs. We can’t wait to go back and see some other parts of the city. Segue via train to Seattle. Our first day there we decided that it would be a good idea to walk obscene distances and see everything. For everything other than our feet, it turned out to be a great idea. We got unbelievable biscuit sandwiches, explored Pike Place market, took the ferry across the bay, Checked out the salmon ladder things, drank killer coffee, drank the best mead ever (with a side of amazing pizza), went up in the Space needle, and finished off the day checking out the Chihuly glass exhibit. It was a killer day. Our time on the Space Needle was pretty magical. Not only did we get to see a stunning sunset but we also had the most unbelievable view of Seattle framed by a full moon and the majestic Mount Rainier. The next day we had the singular pleasure of being photographed by the one and only Benj Haisch. It was amazing. Seattle was a really fun place to hangout but we simply didn’t have enough time to do everything we wanted. Looks like we’ll just have to go back soon. Anyway, thanks for reading my novel and I hope you enjoy the photos!

Emily – Portraits – Ventura, CA

Wife Portraits™

Emily is getting more gorgeous by the day. I seriously can’t believe I get to be married to such a beautiful woman. Today we had the day off together and we decided to take some photos in our apartment. It’s always such a privilege photographing Emily because around me she is her most comfortable – and her most beautiful in my opinion. Anyway, I think these photos capture her as I see her now. They also give a fun but incomplete view of our apartment. We moved here about 9 months ago and still have a lot of design ideas we still need to put in place. The light in the afternoon is so amazing – we never want to leave!

Recentish photos: Ventura, CA

Here are a few photos we like. There’s no theme but they are all pretty much from our new hometown – Ventura, CA. We love it here. Although we love weddings, we also like to take some photos for ourselves once and while. Enjoy!

The Desert

Once upon a time, Peter decided that Emily deserved to have some time off for her birthday. Did he take her dancing? or to a fancy restaurant? or to a concert? no. He took her to the desert – because he knows her best.

After a visit to the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs (our fav), we took a day to explore the haunting landscape and towns around the Salton Sea. The half-abandoned town of Bombay Beach rested near a beach made up of fish bones and dead birds with a boat launch that looked like a nuclear waste spill. From there we traveled through Niland to Salvation Mountain and Slab City. There are no words to describe this place. Photos can’t really do it justice. So you should go see it for yourself. Following our Southern California desert trip we made our way all the way up to Mammoth Mountain. We had to stop at Manzanar in the Mojave desert and battle the crazy winds to snap some photos of each other at the bottom of the snowy Sierras.

There’s way too much to tell about these amazing places and why we wanted to visit them. But hopefully the photos will spark your interest enough to see them for yourself one day. Enjoy.

2 year anniversary trip: Los Angeles and Palm Springs

Here’s a couple shots from our recent trip to Palm Springs. 2 years of being married to your best friend is definitely something to celebrate. Just fyi: no animals were hurt during the creation of these images – just a couple people on account of landing in awkward positions.
